What is Coordinated Management of Meaning? According to University of Twente:
Pearce and Cronen (1980) developed the Coordinated Management of Meaning (CMM) theory. According to CMM, two people who are interacting socially, construct the meaning of their conversation. Each of the individuals is also comprised of an interpersonal system which helps explain their actions and reactions.
The CMM concept can help us to make sense of situations. We have past experiences that relate and contribute to our expectations of upcoming situations.
Each story we tell will hold different interpretations depending on several factors. Some of these factors are relationship, culture, and beliefs.
Each person operates from their own set of “rules”, but they can be changed to be the same with others.
Here’s an example:
Nowadays, I swear to project a strong feeling for something. For instance, when I tell a joke and no body gets it, I tend to say:
I can’t talk like that especially when I’m talking to my mom.

This is a vintage advertisement of Van Heusen. I am going to explain the elements by a dramatistic pentad to determine and analyze the motivations of this ad.
Act (What is going on?)
This is an advertisement of neck ties for men.
Scene (What is the situation?)
Women are helplessly serving the males wearing the man’s world neck ties.
Agent (Who is involved?)
Both genders are involved in the action. Men are the target consumers and women are the ones being toyed by the product.
Agency (How do the ‘agents’ act?)
Men become dominant. The females seem to have less or no power at all.
Purpose (Why do the ‘agents’ act?)
The advertisement would leave men thinking they could have control over women or establish “a man’s world” by wearing the printed neck ties. With these thoughts, they would have the urge to buy the product.
If another advertisement similar to this one would be released in the market today, I strongly believe that it would be an ineffective ad.
Sorry for the words, but who is stupid enough to think that printed neckties could give men power over women? Do the designs have crazy hypnotic effects?
Women would not possibly be enslaved by looking at cute neckties, although I know we have a thing for accessories.
What is symbolic interactionism?
As the name implies, symbolic interactionism is most concerned with the processes and results of human communication through gestures and sounds with shared meanings.
“I” is the person you think you are. “Me” is the person the people around you think you are. Here are a few instances where what I’m thinking is different from other people’s perceptions:

According to Wikipedia:
When a person accepts a certain social role, a number of social pressures are brought to bear to ensure that the role is enacted. The social environment expects the person to behave in a manner that is consistent with the role; the role also provides the person with selective exposure to information consistent with the role.
Altercasting means that we ‘force’ an audience to accept a particular role that makes them behave in the way we want them to behave.
Welcome to our messed up society. You will be judged and stereotyped for the music you listen to, for how you dress, for who you hang out with. You will be judged and stereotyped for everything you are and everything you have.
Most examples of manded altercasting (telling people who they are and who they supposed to be) are manifested in racial and cultural differences of people.

The most obvious example, however, is evident in an adult-child relationship. Children are expected to respect adults because adults are basically older and “know much more in life”.
